About Ruth Rozelaar

"I was born in Germany and spent my childhood either up trees or making music, using a multitude of instruments or my voice. In 1988, I came to England to study music (Tabla) at Dartington. Totnes soon became the home, where my two beautiful daughters were born and raised. When the children were small, music took a back seat in favour of teaching English to earn a crust.

Along came Tango in 1999 and swallowed me whole. First, I became an obsessed dancer, then a teacher, then an organiser, and last but not least, a circle closed when I was ambushed by a bandoneon in 2011, which brought me back to being a musician.

I met my amazing husband Frank in 2012, and from 2014 we went on a honeymoon that lasted a decade, but always returning to Totnes in the summer months. My Tango teaching spread its wings and became part of our international travel route.

I am a Nomad, but with roots in Totnes, and I'm slowly coming back home to spend more time in our shared house community and get involved with local activities once again.

Now, I'm dancing, teaching, organising, performing and studying Tango in Totnes, in the UK and in Europe. There's a lot going on, as you can see from my web site...

I hope you have fun exploring it -  please allow yourself to drift from one discipline to the other and find out how they interlock."

"I love teaching, and at the same time, I am an eternal student."

"Share the Bandoneon Love"

The Bandoneon is a difficult instrument to learn and my wish to connect with other learners led me to organising events online and in person.

In 2018, I started to host the "International Bandoneon Days". The lockdowns moved all activities online, which actually made the Bandoneon Family blossom. Our group is very open and inclusive and spans the globe. We meet weekly online to share our path of learning and we have world renowned masters help us with practice and maintenance of this wonderful instrument.

My passion is for playing 'A La Parrilla' style. A La Parrilla offers us a deep insight into the structure and nature of Tango, whilst at the same time allowing us to express our own musical emotions.
