Why dance?
Dancing brings a unique combination of benefits to individuals, communities, and society. Dance gets us moving – together – to tackle chronic health challenges, combat loneliness, and spend time with people we wouldn’t usually meet. The more we dance, the better we will all be – as individuals, and as a society.
Why the Argentine Tango?
The Argentine Tango holds a unique place in the family of partner dances. With it’s wide-ranging musical expression - from heartrendingly melancholic, to cheeky and sprightly - Tango has space to house everybody’s feelings. It is an improvisatory dance (so there’s no need to remember steps) and as such, it's an easy dance learn enough to get up and onto the dance floor. On the other hand, it allows you to immerse yourself for years without coming to the limit of its wealth of expressions.
About Ruth:
Ruth is a Tango teacher and musician of several decades of experience. She teaches Tango in a fun, inclusive way, moving it away from its overt focus on gender. Instead, what is at the heart of her lessons is musicality, comfort in the embrace and an active participation of both partners within the dancing couple, to co-create their own unique dance experience. In her classes, everybody is encouraged to learn both roles (although this is not obligatory).
FAQ’s:
Do I need a partner?
No - you can come on your own. Of course if you would like to come and learn together with your partner, you are welcome to do so.
Do I need special shoes?
Not really. All you need is something that will swivel on a wooden floor. If you don’t have slippery soled shoes, a pair of thick socks is fine, or a pair of old thin socks that could fit over your shoes to make them slippery.
Is Tango very energetic?
No, it isn’t. Not more than normal walking. The bending backwards, or energetic high jumps that you imagine you might have to do, are from a different kind of Tango. Our Tango is very gentle and calm.
Once I have learnt a bit, where can I go dancing?
There is a strong community of Tango dancers in Devon. At the class, you can pick up info about the various dance opportunities in the area.
