About

Hugo Satorre

Latin-Grammy-Nominee Hugo Satorre was born in Buenos Aires in 1977. He started playing music in school. He did play and studied Flute and Guitar as a child and played with the School Orchestra every week. He began his formal music education at the Juan José Castro Conservatory in 1993 as a classical guitar player. In 1995 he started as well in the same place his studies in piano. He began playing bandoneon, the signature instrument of tango, in 1999. In addition to performing around the world as a bandoneonist, he also dances tango (since 1994) and plays both tango piano and tango guitar (since 1993). 
During his bandoneon training, Hugo was fortunate to study with with the most remarkable bandoneonists of our time, including Walter Rios, Carlos Lazzari and Juan José Mosalini. He has shared the stage with legends of the bandoneon world such as Leopoldo Federico, Emilio Balcarce and Jose Libertela. In 2018, he completed a Bachelor degree in Argentine Music with honors at the prestigious Universidad de San Martín. He also holds a law bachelor degree from the University of Buenos Aires (2004).
Hugo has performed in many of the most prestigious theaters and concert halls around the world, including the Sydney Opera House (Australia), the Walt Disney Hall (Los Angeles, US), Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (Malaysia), Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and the Shanghai Oriental Art Center (Shanghai, China).A highlight of Hugo’s career took place in March 2011, when he was engaged to perform solo accompaniment for the tenor Placido Domingo, arguably the most famous singer alive. The concert took place in Buenos Aires on an outdoor stage, which was set up on the famous 9 de Julio Avenue, the widest avenue in the world. The live audience on 9 de Julio Avenue totaled 120,000 people!Hugo released his first solo album, dedicated to the works of the world-renowned arranger Maximo Mori, in 2016. Hugo was nominated for a Latin Grammy award in 2013 for his album, "Duo Ramírez-Satorre, Piazzolla de Camara.” He has performed worldwide with a number of well-known tango orchestras and bands, including: Quatrotango (2003-2011), Orquesta Victoria (2008-2020), Duo Ramirez Satorre ( 2005-present), Otros Aires (2004-2013), Latin Grammy winner Tanghetto (2003-2006), and La Tubatango (2004-2011). He currently plays as a duo with the Argentine guitarist Emiliano Faryna. For 11 years from 2005 to 2016, Hugo toured the world as part of the company and show, “Tango Fire.” During his tenure as a bandoneon soloist with this IMG tour, he completed seven tours in the United States, seven tours in Oceania, six tours in Asia, four tours in England, and many tours in European countries.Beyond just performing as an instrumentalist, Hugo is also contracted to direct large ensembles around the world, providing coaching and direction to help them play tango music idiomatically. He has performed the famous Astor Piazzolla opera “Maria de Buenos Aires,” in Austria and Italy with an orchestra selected by the famous argentinian conductor Pablo Bggiano. He has directed and performed with symphony orchestras in Argentine, Armenia (Armenian national philharmonic orchestra, with him as a conductor), Austria & Italy (Selected by Pablo Boggiano) and Costa Rica (orquesta sinfónica nacional). Hugo Performed and directed lots of big ensambles all over the world and coaches and teaches them to play tango. He performed the well known Astor Piazzolla opera “Maria de Buenos Aires'' in Argentina, Austria and Italy. Hugo is a dedicated pedagogue in bandoneon and tango education. He has transcribed and written more than 10 books (more to be released soon) free for download for the international bandoneon community in multiple languages in his website http://hugosatorre.com.ar/. His website is one of the most visited websites of bandoneón and tango music. He has written one important learning book for the bandoneon (“mi primer año con el bandoneón”/ “my first year with the bandoneón) that has been translated from Spanish to English and Chinese.

Every 4th Monday of the Month, 7-9pm (unless I'm away!)

The sessions are for people who

  • want to learn to play the Tango with other people

  • have a basic understanding of their instrument

  • have not played Tango before

  • would like to practise their instrument

  • want to develop their general musicianship

Tango Jam Sessions

Every 2nd Monday of the Month, 7-9pm (unless Ruth is away!)

  • already have some understanding of how to play Tango A la Parrilla

  • Want to practise their A la Parrilla skills
